Phosphoric acid

Phosphoric acid leading producer

Elixir Prahovo is the leading producer of high quality phosphoric acid in Southeast Europe.

With 45 years of tradition and expertise, Elixir phosphoric acid has become a synonym for quality and knowledge in phosphoric acid production.

Phosphoric Acid produced in our factory is obtained by wet process, from phosphate rock and concentrated sulfuric acid. From phosphoric acid obtained by the wet process, Elixir Prahovo has the capacities for further purification of its product to reach higher levels of purity.

Phosphoric acid quality – Industrial grade

Purified and filtered phosphoric acid is suitable for fertilizer production and industrial applications.

  • Packaging and delivery in bulk, IBC containers and in drums
  • Guaranteed low levels of iron below 1.5% and fluor below 0.3%

Phosphoric acid quality – Technical grade

Our wet process phosphoric acid is purified by solvent extraction to produce a technical grade phosphoric acid.

Technical grade phosphoric acid is a multi-function agent, and it is used for plant nutrition, in the steel industry, flame retardants and fire extinguishers. It is also used as a catalyst, drying agent and cleaner. In coating industry, it is used as a rust-proof coating for metals; Also, it is very favorable acidity regulator and can be used as antioxidant and ph. regulation in feed industry.

Production process of phosphoric acid

Phosphoric Acid, produced in our factory, is obtained by wet process.

Acidified phosphate rock

Produced from the fluorapatite – phosphate rock, with the addition of concentrated sulfuric acid.

Industrial grade

The acid is evaporated to obtain the commercial grade acid of 52.5% P2O5 (72% H3PO4).The acid is evaporated to obtain the commercial grade acid of 52.5% P2O5 (72% H3PO4).

The wet process – reaction, filtration, and concentration

1

The phosphate rock is ground and acidified with sulfuric acid in the reactor vessel.

In the reaction, the tricalcium phosphate in the phosphate rock is converted to phosphoric acid and to the insoluble salt calcium sulfate (CaSO4), also known as gypsum. The concentration of sulfuric acid must be maintained at 93-98% as it affects the acidulation reaction rate and crystallization of gypsum.

Filtration process

The next step is the filtration where the solids are separated and washed, and the phosphoric acid of 30% P2O5 (about 50% H3PO4) is received.

2

Finally, the acid is evaporated to obtain the industrial grade acid of 52.5% P2O5 (72% H3PO4)

The color of obtained acid varies from light green to brown depending on the type of phosphates is used in production.

We use by-products in other processes

Fluor silicic acid is a vital by-product in the process of phosphoric acid used as key raw material in Aluminium fluoride production.

It may be neutralized with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium hexa fluorosilicate. The acid is used to produce AlumoFluor (aluminium fluoride), which is one of our newly developed products. Circular economy is in the focus of our production.

Circular economy approach

Usage of phosphoric acid

The use of phosphoric acid is widespread and mainly depends on the degree of purity of phosphoric acid.

Widely used in the manufacturing of building materials and construction industry. Phosphates improve resistance and fire insulation of ceramics, floor tiles, refractory materials.

Phosphating metal surfaces reduces the risk of corroding, provide the better paint adhesion and electrical insulation. Phosphoric acid is widely used for cleaning metallic surfaces.

Our products are used in the production of cathode materials to lithium-ion battery producers or other power applications, as they are stable over a wide range of temperature.

Our purified phosphoric acid is used in the industrial detergents production as it provides high cleaning efficiency and acts as a softening, complexing, and dispersing agent.

Phosphates salts are used as whitening agent for toothpastes, and as ingredient that slow down blood coagulation. They are also sustainable cosmetic ingredient.

Purified phosphoric acid can contributes to the plant phosphate needs at all growth stages, help protecting other nutrients from precipitation and increase their availability.

Reliable Supplier

Elixir Prahovo

The production of Phosphoric Acid started in 1960

Elixir Prahovo has a tradition of more than 50 years in the production of chemical products. After the privatization in 2011 and the modernization of the plant, the production of purified phosphoric acid began in 2014, and the production of mineral fertilizers in 2017. The reconstructed aluminium fluoride factory started operating in 2021.

Logistics

Prahovo is located on the bank of the river Danube, right on the threepoint border of Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria.

Transhipment capacity of Prahovo Port is over a million and a half tons per annum.

River transport

Towards the east, the Danube connects Prahovo directly to the Black Sea (626 km) and Constanta, the most important harbour in the region, with a reloading capacity of 100 million tonnes per year.
Northward, the Danube connects Prahovo to the countries of the Danube basin, all the way to Germany. Through the Rhine-Main- Danube Canal it is connected to Rotterdam and the North Sea, as well as to Mannheim.

Rail transport

There is a well-developed rail infrastructure with a number of industrial tracks within the port, and the whole existing complex is connected to the Serbian Railways system and the international rail network.

Road transport

Prahovo is connected with around 50 km of road to Vidin in Bulgaria, and Calafat in Romania, both of which are important road and rail hubs on the European Corridor 4. Some 150 km from Prahovo there is the European Corridor 10, a highway that connects our complex and Serbia with other European countries.
